Real Life Mario Kart

HAHAHAHA!

Book Review: We

Wow, I really set a blazing pace with books, eh?  My last review was 5 months ago!!  And it's not even cuz its a bad book, I loved it!  The book is We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, and it's the last (but actually the first) of the three classic dystopian novels I read.  It was really good, and much different from the other two.  1984 still wins as the most politically and socially relevant when you compare to real life.  Brave New World has its own method, and had very interesting ideas about the functioning of societies.  This one definitely had things to say on both these things, but what stood out for me was how it was written.  It's first person, a man's journal, telling his experience of loving the utopia, being corrupted away (by a woman, naturally), and coming back to it, nothing new there (although it was when he wrote it).  But for some reason, to me at least, the book reads so much more smoothly.  The writing is almost poetic, it was enjoyable to just read, almost independent of the content.  It's a translation, so that may have something bad or good to say about how it reads, but I really liked it.  Anyway, it's not long, despite my huge delay in reading it, and like I say it's nice to read, so I'd definitely recommend it.

Next up: political fiction?  political biography?  history?  science history?  or straight up nerd town fantasy?  not sure yet :)

300

Holy god.  I just saw 300.  That is the best movie I've ever seen!!  It is everything I hoped it would be.  There were a couple silly parts that distracted that weren't in the book, and B has some unkind comments about some of the rhetoric.  But, 'sides that, it was perfect.  And the battles, jeeeeesus, that is the best fight filming I've ever seen.  I know I'm already hyperboling, but I'm serious, I've never seen better fight sequences.  I can't wait to go see it again!  You should go see it now!

Ze Frank :(

Ze Frank is ending!  I'm really sad!  He's the guy been doing the daily vidcast for the past year, and his "internship" is almost over.  It super sucks, he's the one part of the internet besides email and KATG that I insist on every day!  Anyway, yesterday he got Jonathan Coulton to do all the songs he's written over the past year - it's cool!

Ryan vs. Dorkman 2

Remember Ryan vs. Dorkman?  Well, here's part 2!  These guys are badass.  The music is only ok, the grunty punchy sounds are weak.  But the light saber sounds are perfect and their choreography is just awesome.

Star Wars Kid Matrix

Haha, this is way old but I never saw it before.

Video Games Don't Kill

So everyone knows I'm pretty vehement about the video-games-are-the-root-of-evil crowd.  And I don't need to repeat the standard arguments of the comicbooks/D&D/ rockmusic/rapmusic cycle, or the stats not supporting their claims, or etc etc.  But here's a new one.  She's basically pointing out that when a black kid kills someone, he's a monster, a product of his black environment.  But when the white suburban kid kills someone, he's an innocent kid corrupted by video games.  It gives an excuse to the white kid for turning out bad.  That's a very interesting argument that never even occurred to me!
